Turning the 1965 Mystery Skater into a Leather Wrapped Skateboard Deck!
Hey guys - I’m Ethan Carter and I like to make and wrap iconic items in leather and I’ve wanted to wrap a skateboard deck in leather for a long time but just never found the right idea or inspiration. That is until I was recently watching two of my idols, Dan of The Danocracy and Tony Hawk’s latest search for who they refer to as the Icon of Style, Mystery Skater pictured in this 1965 picture from a Life Magazine’s story about skateboarding in central park. The second I saw it I had an image in my head of what I wanted the skate deck artwork to look like, but I have zero experience in creating my own digital artwork, so I went to RUclips University real quick to see if I could figure out ...

Wow you make everything
Thanks so much! Haha I'm trying for sure!
Sweet you should make a wallet with the foot ball❤
Thank you so much! I may have to do that!!!
What kind of thread are you using? The one I have is so bulky compared to yours
It's 0.45mm White Polyester Wax Linen Thread - I have a link to it in the description under "Leatherworking Materials/Supplies"
That's really cool, great job!
Thank you so much, appreciate it!
When you copied someone's work dont repeat it word for word
???
I love the edge beveling part😮👍🏻
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
The design is genius, yet so simple. Love the Tee doubling as a flap latch. Again, great job. Cheers!
Thank you so much for that, appreciate it!

Super cool build! I think the design of the skater you ended up with turned out amazingly good 👍 great job Ethan.
Thank you so much bud! I'm super proud of the ending design since I have almost no experience using the software like that! Always exciting when a project "forces" you to learn new skills, right?!
@EthanCarterDesigns indeed, its what we live for
@@MakerCuisine Exactly!
AWESOME ✊️🔥✌️💚
Thank you so much bud!
UGH...why did you do that cut/edit at 5:19 when starting the stitch? Just show us the complete start of the stitch without cutting the looping direction. Seeing the complete start of the loops is the critical piece I'm trying to understand from this
Beautifully done!!!✊️🔥✌️💚
Thank you so much bud!
Very neat, thanks for sharing sir.
You are so welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
I use a food saver on my gun and knife hosters. You can take a bone tool and go around the part in the bag while vac forming to get sharper detail. You don't have to just rely on what the vacuum leaves.
🔥
That’s a very cool idea. Turned out great.
Thank you so much, appreciate it!
Very cool
Thank you so much!!!
Too funny you're my first up when i searched this thanks for the info!!!✊️🔥✌️💚
Holy craps! Talk about wasting leather 😢
Really cool. What is your cutting device?
Thank you! It's a 10 watt Diode laser - this specific model is the Aufero Laser 2
Thank you @@EthanCarterDesigns
@@agolona2734 You're very welcome, anytime!
Be careful with the magnet of choice, some magnets are very brittle and can shatter leaving bunch of magnet dust and shards everywhere. still super good tips
That is beautiful
Thank you so much!
What thickness of leather would you recommend?
Depends on the project - in this video I'm using 3.5oz leather and it molds really well, but depending on what you're making you might want something a little thicker which may hold up better over time with heavy use.
Soo awesome love you're work brotha!!!✊️🔥✌️💚
Thank you so much man - really appreciate it!
I like the penny board better. It comes out more authentic to the picture with the guy wearing a black suit.
Yep, agreed!
Clean.
Thank you so much!
That's just Kevin Costner time traveling disguised as a hipster
Hahaha I totally see that now!
Can I purchase a board? Not to ride just to look at🔥💯
Thank you so much for being interested. I'm not sure if I can make a leather wrapped one at even close to a reasonable price, but I may look into other options to sell and will let you know if I do!
DOPE. absolutely 100% DOPE AS HELL.
Thank you so much, appreciate that so much!
Such an awesome video mate
Thank you so much, really appreciate that!
What thickness of leather would you typically recommend for such projects ? :)
For fairly lightweight sheaths/holsters like this I'm using 3.5-4oz leather which molds really well. With that said, heavy duty holsters are closer to 5-6oz typically I think and it take a little more effort to get a good mold, but it's definitely doable. Hope that helps!
This video was not only fun and informative but also short. Thank you for not making it 30min-long montage!
Thank you for that - I try to let the video and content dictate the pace and length of my videos even if it goes against the algorithm, so I really appreciate that you thought so!
So cool! Keep wrapping things in leather!
Thank you so much Grant! Will do haha
Insanely wicked cool project and great video!!
Thank you Tony, and thanks for all the help with the photos!!!
That’s awesome! You should donate it to the Skateboarding Hall of Fame! Todd is such a cool guy and would appreciate it! The grommets were a brilliant touch! Great idea ❤
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I would love to make one for the hall of fame!
Sweet project, now could you tell me where to get one of those leather tool wall hanging you have on the wall.
Thank you so much! So cool, right? My buddy Mateo Mattia designed and sells them on his website www.mateomattia.com/product-page/leather-works-bandana
Unreal work as always Ethan! Great process, super fun to watch this
Thank you so much Dan! Thank you for all the inspiration, support, and encouragement!
Outstanding work on the graphic! You could start a whole new line of skateboards. Great to see a RUclips from you. Cheers.
Thank you so much bud, I'm a little surprised I was actually able to make the graphic I envisioned in my head...I was super pumped and always fun to learn new things! That would be amazing...how cool would that be!
Great video Ethan
Thank you so much Keith, I really appreciate it!
Really cool how you were able to inlay the opposing color to give it such an amazing contrast. Proud of you man.
Thank you so much Scott! I appreciate all your support!
It was cool, mate.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Super cool Ethan!
Thank you so much bud!
Said Emmett 😂?.. i know gta's emmet
How do you predict how much thread to use, i always end up using too much and getting tangled
Most people go with the thread being 4 times the length of what you're stitching. I usually go a little longer than that because there's nothing worse then running out of thread right before the end and also the thickness of material can also mean more or less thread is needed.
This is so cool!!
Thank you so much!!!
